What if I told you that, despite their reputation among older generations for being self-centered, Millennials are the most generous generation? What if I told you that, despite their reputation among older generations for being interested only in gaming in their mother’s basement, Millennials love to travel? You’d most likely shake your head in disbelief and deliver a resounding, “OK Boomer….” But believe it, the generation infamously targeted for being self-centered and sedentary loves to “Give” & “Go.”

A study conducted by Fidelity Charitable (Bader) found that the Millennial Generation, Americans born between 1981 – 1996, contributes its time and money on behalf of charitable causes at a rate twice that of Baby Boomers or Gen X’ers. Fidelity Charitable’s survey of 3,000 adults, including 288 entrepreneurs, found that millennials, on average, donate $13,654 a year to charity, compared to $6,200 for Gen X and $6,192 for baby boomers. Small sample and, given the representative giving totals, most likely pulled from an affluent pool – but still striking results.

And while Millennials are proving themselves to be the most generous generation, they are also proving to be more mobile than their older counterparts. Author Megan Leonhardt (Leonhardt) cites AARP’s 2019 Travel Report which points out that the average millennial (ages 21 to 37) plans on taking roughly five trips throughout the year, three of which are expected to be international. That’s more international trips than Gen X (ages 38 to 53) and more overall trips than Baby Boomers (ages 54 to 72).
